If Jesus Couldn’t, Why Do We Think We Can?

As we approach the end of another year, we will probably engage in some reflection. Did we reach our goals? Are we where we wanted to be as the year comes to a close? Surely, all of us will have some regrets. But for others, they may easily fall into depression because some of their goals remain out of reach.

Through the years, I have found that many who are weighed down with the burden of unfulfilled goals have goals that are beyond their ability to control or reach. So, let me remind you of an important thought – “If Jesus couldn’t do it, why do you think you can?”

For instance:

  • If Jesus couldn’t make his own family believe he was the Son of God (John 7:1-6), why do you think you can? Yet, how many people beat themselves up for failing to convince loved ones to become disciples of Jesus?
  • If Jesus couldn’t avoid sadness and sorrow (Isaiah 53:5), why do you think you can? People sometimes act as though they expect life to be a bed of roses, but Jesus couldn’t even have it that way.
  • If Jesus couldn’t go without rest (Mark 6:31), why do you think you can? Stop feeling guilty if you aren’t on the go 24/7.
  • If Jesus couldn’t avoid making enemies (John 15:18), why do you think you can? If you have conformed your life to Jesus, you will be hated for the same reasons he was hated.
  • If Jesus couldn’t cause all men to repent (Matthew 23:37), why do you think you can? Learn to be content with your best efforts.
  • If Jesus couldn’t even forgive all men of their sins, though he was willing (John 8:24; Luke 17:3), why do you think you can? Always maintain a willingness to forgive, but you can’t force a person to do what they must do to restore a relationship.

Maybe the first step to contentment is shedding the guilt that comes from the unrealistic expectations we place upon ourselves.  After all, if Jesus couldn’t do it, why do you think you can? Give it some thought.
