Be Loyal To The King

By Steve Higginbotham

The political machine in America seems to be humming right now. Although we are more than a year away, we are getting ready to elect a new president. Along with this election comes all the political rhetoric (e.g. if this party gets in power, this calamity will occur. If the other party gets in power, these calamities will occur, etc.). Regardless of who wins the next presidential election, can I remind you of a few truths?

Since we are citizens of the Kingdom of God first, remember that our mission will not change one whit, regardless of who is elected. The person who sits in the White House or upon the Supreme Court does not change our identity, our loyalty, or our mission.

Regardless of who is elected, our nation needs the intercessory prayers of Christians. Our presidential candidates, our Supreme Court, and our federal and state legislators, nearly all support policies and laws that are contrary to the Supreme Law of God. The fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much (James 5:16). Have you been praying that we might be able to live a quiet and peaceful life (1 Timothy 2:1-2)?

As a citizen of the Kingdom of God, do not get so entangled in politics that you find yourself defending a candidate or a party at the expense of truth. Let God be true and every man a liar (Romans 3:4). Don’t be so wedded to a person or a party that you will excuse or justify what is sinful.

And finally, don’t forget your first loyalty. You are first a citizen in the Kingdom of God and your allegiance belongs to the King of kings and Lord of lords. The kingdoms of men come and go. They have in the past, and they will continue to do so. But the kingdom of God will stand forever (Daniel 2:44).

It’s my desire, not that God should bless America, but that God should continue to bless America! But even greater than that is my desire for God to continue to bless His eternal kingdom, the church, of which we are citizens.
