49th Annual Southeast Lectureship

Welcome to the Karns church of Christ.  The 49th Annual Southeast Lectureship begins today.  The theme is “Encouraged: Finding Comfort in Christ” and will focus on studies in 2 Corinthians.

Jesus displayed his love and compassion for all mankind through many events recorded in scripture.

Upon seeing Mary and others weeping over the death of Lazarus, Jesus “groaned in the spirit and was troubled” (John 11).  Though Lazarus would be raised, Jesus demonstrated his love and compassion as he wept for the grieving.

On two occasions Jesus fed 5,000 men and 4,000 men respectively, and the women and children who accompanied them. Jesus “was moved with compassion” when he saw the great multitude of people (Matthew 14:14), and in Matthew 15:32, he had “compassion on the multitude.”  Jesus cared for the physical well-being of all people.

Jesus cared for the lost and hopeless.  “…But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest” (Matthew 9:35-38).

Jesus had compassion for Jerusalem, knowing the temple would be destroyed. Luke 19:41-44 states, “as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it.”  Jesus was saddened they could not see their own fate.

Jesus had compassion on those who crucified God’s Son who was sent for their very salvation. While on the cross, Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do” (Luke 23:32-34).

Jesus cares for the physical and spiritual well-being of all people now just as he did when alive; He loves the lost, and He loves those who reject him.  Because of his deep love and compassion and not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9), he offers the gospel of salvation.

Our prayer is that the lectureship will be a source of strength and encouragement, knowing the refuge and comfort that only Christ can provide.  “Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen” (Philippians 4:20).
