Who I Am

By Spencer Clark

This world has an identity crisis. It is full of lost people who are struggling to make sense of this life and find meaning and purpose in it. Why is this? Certainly because of sin and rebellion against God, but because they fail to see humanity as the Creator sees us.

How then does God see us? We were created in the image of God, after his likeness (Gen 1:26) and we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Ps 139:14). This alone is reason enough to praise Him, love Him, and serve Him. But there’s more to this story. While we were made in His image, we all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23). We are sinners in need of a Savior. Yet, God loved us and sent His Son on our behalf (John 3:16). We can be saved by His blood and his blood alone and joined to the church, His body, in which we will never be alone. In Christ, we are made new and created for good works (Eph 2:10). We have purpose and hope in this life because Jesus has given us one.

Humanity is lost and hopeless because they fail to see themselves in this way. They are enslaved to sin and trapped in the wisdom of this world that shields them from the truth of God’s Word. We have a Creator who knows us intimately, even better than we know ourselves. When we recognize that, the hopeless identity crisis of the world will begin to vanish and the truth of the Gospel will become clear. We will see ourselves as He intends and find hope and salvation through His Son Jesus Christ, who gave himself freely on our behalf.
