What Delights You?

What do you think of when you think about being delighted?  The dictionary defines delight as pleasing someone greatly, causing a high degree of satisfaction, and something that gives great pleasure.  The world is full of many things that have the potential to delight us, some of these things are good things and some are not.  My question is, what is it that you find delight in?  What are the things in this life that bring you great satisfaction?  What things do you find yourself going back to or engaging in regularly?

Psalm 1:1-6 gives us some insight into what should delight us.  It reads, “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of scoffers!  But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night.  He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.  The wicked are not so, but they are like chaff which the wind drives away.  Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

Scripture also reveals what delights God.  For example, Psalm 147:11 says, “The Lord takes pleasure in those who fear Him, in those who hope in His mercy.”  Proverbs 11:20 tells us, “The perverse in heart are an abomination to the Lord, but the blameless in their walk are His delight.”  There are many more.

I believe it is a very healthy practice to perform a self-check every once in a while and ask yourself questions about what is delighting you.  Your answers to those questions can help you make corrections in your spiritual attitude and life where necessary.  We can become desensitized to the sin and evil that is constantly around us in the world, even to the point where we start engaging in, and even delighting in it.

It should be no surprise that when we delight in the law of the Lord as the blessed man does in Psalm 1, the Lord will delight in us.  Let us all consider the things that are delighting us.
