Abounding in the Work of the Lord

By Dave Benner

In I Corinthians 15:58 Paul writes, “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord.” This is the theme our elders selected for 2021. We want to be known by our neighbors and the Karns community as a group that exhibits the love of Jesus by what we do.

We certainly hope and expect that 2021 will be a better year in many ways! That being said, we can make it better in service to our Lord Jesus. Let’s abound in the work of the Lord and not wait until the calendar changes.

What can we do under the current restrictions? Despite COVID-19, one of our members taught and converted a friend to the Gospel. Recently, 18 of our ladies volunteered to take cookie trays to our shut-ins. They are also taking some to nonmembers and frequent visitors. How about your neighbors? Perhaps you can make and give cookies to your neighbors and invite them to study the Bible with you.

Another good work is providing meals to our shut-ins or those quarantined. Several ladies make a meal every week and deliver it to our shut-in members. Some have done it since we had to discontinue TLC meals. Maybe you could volunteer to relieve one of these ladies for a month or 6.

We can always use more graders for the Bible Correspondence Courses. We need a volunteer to put our communion bags together each week. We should call our shutins and send cards to those who recovering from surgery or COVID. We should do things for others, not just our members. As Paul wrote in Galatians 6:10, “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those of the household of faith.”

And to all who are already doing much, Paul says, “Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9).
