Where Are You?

In Genesis chapter 3, we learn much about Satan, man, and God. It was a time when Adam and Eve lived in the Garden of Eden and God walked on the earth. They had everything they needed and God had told Adam there was only one rule. They must not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil or they shall surely die (Genesis 3:17).

First, we learn that Satan (the serpent) lies. He told Eve that they would not surely die. He said that God banned the tree because the knowledge of good and evil would make them like God.

Second, we learn that man is subject to temptations. Adam and Eve could not follow one rule when they had everything they needed in the garden.

Third, we learn there are consequences of sin. Adam and Eve both suffered consequences and were cast out of the garden (Genesis 3:14-19). These consequences affect us to this day. Even the serpent suffered consequences.

Of course, we deal with sin and temptations in our lives daily. However, God provides a remedy for sin through His Son Jesus. We are truly blessed to have such a loving Father. In 1 John 1:7, John writes, “If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”

But today I want to consider one verse in this story. In Genesis 3:9, God asked Adam, “Where are you?” What an interesting question! I doubt that any serious Bible student thinks God did not know exactly where Adam had hidden. I think His question was more along the lines of, “Where are you spiritually?” Perhaps, “What have you done?”

Even though God knew exactly what they did, He wanted them to acknowledge their lack of obedience which resulted in sin. We can be sure He knows where we are both physically and spiritually.

So, where are we today? Are we walking in the light? God knows!
