Welcoming Hearts

We are blessed to gather on the first day of the week to worship the Father and to build up the brethren through song, prayer, partaking of communion, reading and preaching God’s word, and giving to further the work of the kingdom.  We are also blessed to have visitors each week, and it is encouraging to see our members welcoming our guests.

I have visited other places in the past and not felt welcome. This left me pondering why a church would not demonstrate its love for God through hospitality. Jesus displays his love and compassion for all mankind throughout Scripture, and Christians are to exemplify this same care and compassion for others.

Jesus cares for the lost and wandering sheep. “…But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest”” (Matthew 9:35-38).

Jesus cares for the physical and spiritual well-being of all people. He loves the lost, and he loves those who may reject him. Because of his deep love and compassion and not wanting anyone to perish (2 Peter 3:9), he offers the gospel of salvation.

Before us are many opportunities to do good (Galatians 6:10) and to let our light shine (Matthew 5:16). The prospect of visitors in our assemblies should drive us to make sure we greet fellow brethren and welcome the lost who may be seeking the truth found only in God’s word.

I really love that Karns has purposed to greet visitors and is always seeking ways to improve. It was that same welcoming environment and hospitality that brought my family to Karns over 36 years ago. May we all continue to keep up the good work and greet newcomers in the same manner we welcome guests into our homes. If any Karns members would like to be more actively involved in greeting visitors, the shepherds or Spencer can guide you in the right direction and provide additional support!
