You probably have a Bible verse that scares you, but the one that scares me the most is Luke 4:13: “Then when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him, until an opportune time.”
This verse scares me because if the devil was unwilling to give up on Jesus after taking his best shots at Him, I know Satan will certainly be tempting me as well as all Christians. Think of Christ’s temptations. He had fasted for 40 days and Satan tempted Him with food. Also consider that though Christ countered Satan’s statements with scripture, Satan also quoted scripture.
Unfortunately Satan can concentrate on Christians because he and his helpers already have all others in hand. No need for him to tempt those who are already in his domain. Christians are in Satan’s crosshairs! What can we do?
It seems that Paul anticipated this question. In Ephesians 6:11 and 14-18 he says, “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.”
Just as the armor and weapons of a Roman soldier protected him against his enemies, the full armor of God protects the Christian from Satan. We must be careful and not neglect a single piece of the armor of God. Just as a lone soldier is very vulnerable, so are Christians who stand alone. That’s why Paul tells us to pray for our brethren.
Praise God that He has not left us alone and defenseless against the devil
