The Church Is Like…

(2 Timothy 2:1-13)

Introduction: 1. 2.

3. 4.

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which you make compare one thing to another. A mixed metaphor is when one makes an incongruous comparison; for example: a. We can stand here and talk until the cows turn blue. b. You could have knocked me over with a fender. c. I wouldn’t eat that with a ten foot pole. d. He was watching me like I was a hawk. e. He was a wolf in cheap clothing. Well, Paul doesn’t use mixed metaphors in 2 Timothy 2, but he certainly uses a lot of them. Let’s consider.

I. The Church is Like an Army A. (2 Timothy 2:3-4). B. We need endurance. C. We need priorities. D. The turf which we occupy is not a playground, but a battlefield.

II. The Church is Like Athletics A. (2 Timothy 2:5). B. We must follow the rules or be disqualified.

III. The Church is Life Farming A. (2 Timothy 2:6). B. We must be willing to be hard-working.

Conclusion: 1. 2. 3.

Verse seven sums up the conclusion when Paul simply says, “May the Lord give you understanding in all things.” The apostle Paul has certainly helped us to understand by the use of these metaphors. If we endure, we shall some day receive our reward and reign with Christ.
