Lectureship Week

I can think of no greater obligation or responsibility that an eldership has than to ensure that the church is provided with biblical instruction and motivation to put that instruction into practice.

In spite of technology and handy resources at our fingertips, statistics tell us that Americans are more biblically illiterate today than we were 100 years ago. Therefore, it is disconcerting to me to witness some of the modern trends being adopted in the Lord’s church today. Sermons are giving way to “sermonettes” that get us to the restaurants before everyone else. Bible studies are being canceled for service projects and fellowship time. Evening services and mid-week services are being discontinued due to a lack of interest.

I’m not suggesting that churches do not have the right to do what they wish within the realm of expediency.  What I am saying is that minimizing the amount of preaching and Bible study that takes place is not a solution but a contributor to the biblical illiteracy we see today.

That is one of the reasons I am thankful for our annual Bible lectureship. For more than 50 years, the church at Karns has prepared a “feast” intended to increase our knowledge of God’s word, motivate us, and strengthen our fellowship with each other. It is only four days of Bible study out of an entire year, and I hope you will take advantage of it.

In the past, we have been privileged to hear such men as Johnny Ramsey, Hugo McCord, Tom Holland, Wayne Jackson, Bill Nicks, Garland Elkins, Thomas Eaves, Thomas Warren, Rex Turner, Guy N. Woods, Franklin Camp, James Meadows, and a host of other great preachers. This week, we have the opportunity to learn and be encouraged just as in years past.

I also want to remind you of our special evangelistic emphasis during the night sessions. Please leverage your influence and invite someone to attend with you. Who knows what doors of opportunity will be opened through your presence and invitation? Let God use you as a tool in his providence.
