Lasting Peace

By Terry Clark

What troubles you? What keeps you awake at night?

Peace can be found in Christ, the Savior.

We read in John 16 that Jesus would soon be separated from his disciples. Jesus tells the disciples in verse 32 they would be scattered, leaving Him alone; however, the Father was with Him. Jesus, not wanting them to lose hope, states in verse 33, “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.””

Those who believe and obey the will of the Father (baptism for the remission of sins) can have hope and assurance in something much greater than what life on earth can provide. Romans 5:1-5 tells us we can have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ and a hope that does not disappoint, though we face tribulations.

Peace can be found in prayer:

It is impossible to find true peace by our own means. We must approach the Father humbly in prayer and place our fears, anxiety, and those things that trouble us into God’s hands. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Peace can be found in meditation of those things good and righteous:

Worldly things compete for our attention and Satan works hard to take our focus off things above. Sadly, many are drawn away at the cost of their soul. “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy–meditate on these things. The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you” (Philippians 4:8-9).

The world is troubled and not at peace. Peace can be found in God, through prayer, and a focus on what is good and righteous.
