“Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.”
The possibility of dying before you wake is filled with implications. Are you prepared to die? Have you made preparation for such an eventuality? Is your eternity secure? Good questions, but not what I want you to focus upon at the moment.
I’d rather like to ask you if you’ve made preparation for the eventuality that you “wake up?” It’s one thing to be ready to “die in Christ,” it’s another to be prepared to “live for Christ.” What preparation have you made if you don’t die before you wake? How have you planned and prepared to spend your time, talents, and energy in service to God?
Friends, I really don’t think one can be fully prepared to “die in Christ” until one has prepared to “live in Christ.”
If you should die before you wake, I pray the Lord your soul to take. But if you should wake before you die, then what…?
As we are now a couple months into the year 2011, maybe it’s a good time to take stock of our lives. Did we make any commitments or resolutions at the first of the year with reference to our spiritual life? If so, are we keeping them? Don’t allow another year to slip through our fingers. Surely we all have more to give to the cause of Christ than we have given in the past. There is probably room for more personal growth and development, more sacrifice and involvement, and more hands-on ministry and prayer.
If you should wake before you die, then what? Give it some thought.
