Part of humility involves valuing others above self (Phil. 2:3) and submitting ourselves to God’s will (James 4:6,7).
Christ is the perfect example of humility, service, and submission in many ways. One example is found in Philippians 2:3-11, where we see that we are not to be selfish or conceited, but humble. We are to regard others as better than ourselves. This scripture teaches that we are to be like-minded with Christ. Jesus, who being in the form of God, took on the form of a mere human servant. He humbled himself for others, for us, and sacrificed himself, being falsely accused, tried, and condemned. He, the son of God, equal with God, humbled himself, endured degrading beatings, insults, ridicule, being spat upon, and then was horribly crucified on a cross so we could live forever in heaven. He, being God, came down to suffer at our hands and submitted himself to the Father’s will. We see here in this passage that he ultimately was exalted, and the Father decreed that every knee shall bow to him. Humility, service, and submission all go together and result in God’s blessing.
God will exalt us with an eternal home with him in heaven when we humble ourselves, submit ourselves to his will, and serve him and those around us.
“For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints” (Heb. 6:10)
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45 ).
… “to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me” (Matt. 25:40).
When we love God enough to humble ourselves before God and love our neighbor enough to put them before ourselves, we are keeping the greatest commands (Matt. 22:36-40).
Humble yourself, serve God and your neighbor, submit to his will, then trust him to reward you.
