Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand

By Steve Higginbotham

More than one hundred years ago, Franklin L. Eiland penned these words:

Time is filled with swift transition, Naught of earth unmoved can stand, Build your hopes on things eternal, Hold to God’s unchanging hand.

The events of the past couple months have reminded my family and me of just how true the words are to that hymn. A year ago at this same time, the thought of moving to Karns had never entered my mind. Yet, in a few short months, my family and I will be a part of the Karns community and the Karns church family.

We’re excited about this move! In fact, I’ve even been contemplating how I will look in an orange hoodie! Our entire family is anxious for the time to arrive when this period of transition will be behind us. I’ve heard it said that the only people who like change are babies, and I think I concur. The process of change is difficult, but the fruits of change can be a bountiful blessing. I’m convinced that this will be the case at Karns.

Since accepting the work at Karns, I have spent a great deal of time in thought and prayer about this transition, and I’d like to share a few of my personal thoughts with you.

First, it is comforting to me to know that Edwin will still be at Karns. Twenty years ago, when I moved to Glasgow, the former preacher, Charles Tidwell, remained at the congregation and served as an elder. He became a great mentor to me. What an advantage and blessing it will be to have Edwin present. Most men who move to a new congregation never have such a resource available to them.

I know we still have a few months until we will begin working full-time at Karns, but I would really like to be able to “hit the ground running.” I want to do my best over the next few months to get to know many of you better. I know we’re a bit limited by distance, but I would really like it if you would add me as a friend on Facebook, or email me and tell me a little about yourself. Due to the “transition,” the best email address for me at this time is higginbotham.steve@gmail.com and Kim’s email is Higginbotham.kim@gmail.com. Or if you’re a “letter writer,” our mailing address is: Steve & Kim Higginbotham, 115 Cranbrook Drive, Glasgow, KY 42141.

I would also like to request that we all pray and seek God’s blessing in this transition. Did you know the prophet Isaiah actually asked God’s children to pray so much that they gave Him [God] no rest? (Isaiah 62:6-7). What if that would be descriptive of our prayer life with reference to this transition for the Karns congregation? Surely, God would bless us.

These are just a few of the things which have been occupying my mind over the past couple weeks. As I have already stated, we’re excited and anxious to begin our work at Karns. Until then, let’s do what we can to get to know each other better, and let’s “give God no rest.”
