We live in a fast-paced world. We often do not get the rest we need before the chaos seems to start over again. This adversely affects all of us and can wear down the best of us. When we do get enough rest we feel so grateful and relieved. Remember that God has promised his followers an eternal rest. “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God” (Hebrews 4:9). This rest, ultimately in heaven, is one that we do not want to miss, yet we can miss it through disobedience.
In Hebrews chapters 3 and 4, the writer recalls the Israelites who wandered in the desert for 40 years and were lost due to their unbelief. In fact, God swore that those who did not obey would not enter His rest (Heb. 3:16-19). The writer warns that disobedience on our part could likewise result in losing our rest. “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. For we who believe do enter that rest …” (Hebrews 4:2 & 3a). In His sermon on the mount, Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, `Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matthew 7:21).
So as we go about our daily lives and often get weary to the bone, remember that we have a promised rest. Let’s also remember that we determine if we get this rest by our faith and obedience to God’s Word. Let’s not miss our rest and be sure to give God all the glory!
