Doing Our ONE Thing

“Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord” (Romans 12:10-11).

Often we think about Scriptures that talk of the many talents that exists among us for the building up of the body. We also tend to think we are doing well to pick our ONE thing we can do and focus our attention on only that. No harm in doing our ONE thing well, but I believe the Lord expects more than that of us. Also, we all need help from others in order to accomplish the most good as a congregation.

Think about ALL of the things done at Karns to teach, worship, benefit those in need, promote fellowship, evangelize, and upkeep our facilities. Many people are required to accomplish ALL the good that is done. Some folks are involved in many of these areas to the point of overuse and then some folks are involved in doing their ONE thing. We need more people to step up and become involved in more things to help those who are struggling to see that ALL gets done. Things as simple as helping to set up and clean up for our fellowship meals, taking out the trash, carrying things, or just participating in many other ways. Look around and you will see plenty of opportunities needing your help.

In the story of the 5, 2 and 1 talents given to the servants of the Master, we learn that God expects us to use ALL the talents we are given to increase HIS kingdom and help others.

The talents given to us by God are our mental ability, money, bodily strength, time, and any opportunity that may come our way. The desire is that ALL of these will be used in our service to God. We may have only a few abilities, but we have more than ONE, and we should use those abilities to faithfully fulfil our opportunities to serve.

Let’s resolve to get more involved and do more than just our ONE thing in our service to others and God.
