Summer is here, and many families are in full vacation-planning mode. Whether it’s a road trip across the country, a week at the beach, or a once-in-a-lifetime overseas adventure, we tend to pour time and energy into planning the perfect getaway. We check reviews, compare prices, pack carefully, and make sure every detail is in order.
But how much effort do we put into planning for the ultimate trip, the one that leads to eternity in heaven? If we devote so much time to a temporary escape, shouldn’t we be even more intentional about preparing for heaven?
Vacation Planning vs. Eternal Planning:
- Destination Matters:
We spend hours dreaming about vacation spots, but heaven is the only destination that truly lasts. Jesus said in John 14:2-3, “In My Father’s house are many mansions… I go to prepare a place for you.” Are you preparing to meet Him there? We pick our vacation destination carefully from many choices. Likewise, Scripture tells us there are only two eternal destinations (Matthew 7:13-14). Have you chosen the narrow path that leads to life? - Reservations Required:
You wouldn’t show up at the airport without a ticket or passport. Yet many hope to enter heaven without ever obeying the gospel (2 Thessalonians 1:8). God’s plan is clear: believe, repent, be baptized, and live faithfully (Acts 2:38, Revelation 2:10). Have you made your reservation through faith, repentance, baptism, and walking in obedience? - Cost Is Considered:
Trips cost time and money, and we plan accordingly. Heaven was purchased at the highest price, the blood of Jesus (1 Peter 1:18-19). Are we willing to “count the cost” to follow Him (Luke 14:28-33)? - Don’t Travel Alone:
We love sharing trips with friends and family. Likewise, we should be encouraging others to join us on the journey to heaven. Who are you inviting? - Temporary vs. Eternal:
Even the best vacation ends. Heaven is forever. Don’t trade eternal joy for momentary pleasures (Matthew 16:26).
Vacations are temporary and earthly. Heaven is eternal and glorious. While it’s good to enjoy rest and recreation here, let’s never forget the greater rest God has promised (Hebrews 4:9-11).
The question is not just where are you going this summer, but where are you going forever?
